Noted professor, author, presenter, and learning commons leader, Dr. Loertscher has been working on a robust tool that, “would encourage all people, young or old, to come into command of their own strategies for deciding what to trust, believe, and act upon.” The question is, “Should this information be allowed to STIC (stick) in my brain or should I flush it?” Dr Loertscher suggests that teaching the STIC model along with a heavy dose of lateral reading increases the sophistication and success of validating sources for students. Then in his typical style Dr Loertscher ends with the Big Think and an assignment for readers.

Over the past ten years, much has been written about student use of technology in schools. From TPACK to digital wellness, by ISTE and school districts, there is clear messaging around the need for technology integration in all subject areas. However, there are gaps in student learning, teacher delivery methods, and healthy, ethical habits in students. This BC teacher-librarian addresses the question “How can we shrink the knowledge gap between district information and educational technology leaders, teacher-librarians, and classroom teachers so that all students are leaving high school with the array of digital skills and decision-making habits to support their post-secondary destinations?” She discusses the numerous approaches to teacher professional learning regarding technology in learning, identifying gaps and challenging teacher-librarians to take a lead in addressing the problems and inconsistencies she discovers in her research.
